First of all, there are 2-way, 3-way, and 4-way switches; each with a different purpose. Two-way switches are most common and only have two terminals in addition to the ground screw. These are very simple in nature and simply either break or complete the circuit to turn a light on or off.

If you have two switches that control a light, you must use 3-way switches (more on 4-ways later if you have more than 2 switches). Usually we see people get in trouble when they want to replace one switch with a dimmer. The dimmer in this situation must be a three way and the three wires must go to the correct terminals. (at the end of this article we explain how to look at a switch and most of the time get the hook-up correct. When all else fails, use a continuity tester.) Three-way switches will have 3 terminals in addition to the ground screw. One hot(usually black) wire either comes from the power panel into the switch or one hot wire exits the switch and goes to the light. In between the switches are two wires called travelers. These are considered switched hot wires and can be typically black, red, or sometimes a white wire has black tape wrapped around it at each end to designate it as a hot and not a neutral wire.

Four way switches are used when you have 3 or more switches to control a light. As can be seen in the diagrams below, there is always a 3-way switch at the start and end of the circuit, with 1 or more 4-ways in between. The 4-way switches simply have the two travelers coming in and then going out to the next switch down the line.

Let’s take a look a some diagrams to understand how the circuit and switches work.

First here is an example of a 3-way switch setup. Light is off as there is no path for the hot.

Either moving Switch 1 or Switch 2 will break the hot. And from the Off state, either Switch will make the connection.

Now for an example of a 4-way switch setup. The 4-way switch must be in-between the 3-ways.

Switch 2 either connects 1to3 and 2to4 like shown or when it is flipped it cross connects 1to4 and 2to3. So in the case shown, if switch 2 was flipped, the path would go from switch 1 1-2, then switch 2 1to4, but would stop a switch 3 since there is no path and thus the light goes off.

You may add additional 4-way switches into the middle of the wiring. The 3-way switches must always be at the beginning and at the end of the circuit.

The wires in-between the the 3-way switches are called travelers. If you are pulling wire through conduit, best to use different colored wire like blue and orange. If you are using Romex, I prefer to use the 4 wire version which has a ground, a white neutral, and a black and a red. Little more expensive but from a safety perspective I prefer not to wrap a black piece of tape around the white wire to mark it as a hot.

So use the red and the black for your travelers between switches. On the 3-way switches, you cannot just connect the hot to one of the terminals and the travelers to the remaining two. Look at a diagram on the switch or most times there is a single terminal on the top or bottom for the in/out hot and then two terminals (one on each side) at the other end are for the travelers. Connecting the hot to the side that has one terminal and the travelers to the side that has two terminals is usually NOT the way to do it.

Same goes for the travelers in and out of a 4-way switch. The in is typically both sides of the top of the switch and the out goes on both side of the bottom of the switch. You can verify what is right or wrong using a simple continuity buzzer and comparing the results against the diagram above.

If you didn’t get the wires on the correct terminals, then you will find that it sometimes takes flipping two of the switches to get the light to turn on or off. With the proper wiring, any single switch that is flipped should cause the light to go on or off.

And please remember to turn the power off first. BZZZT sounds or arc welding your switch is not a good thing.

To pass your Network+ certification exam, you must know the differences between hubs, repeaters, bridges, and switches. The differences are straightforward for the most part, so let’s examine the basic purpose of these devices.

Hubs and repeaters both work at the Physical layer of the OSI model. They do not help to direct traffic toward the proper destination, as routers and switches do. Their purpose in the network is simply to make the signal strong enough to reach its destination, by regenerating the signal. Hubs and repeaters both take an incoming data signal and make a clean, strong copy of the signal. Otherwise, the signal would suffer from attenuation, the gradual weakening of a signal as it gets farther and farther away from the source.

Repeaters are just about extinct in today’s networks, because they only have one input port and one output port. Naturally, this means we could only regenerate a single data signal. Hubs are really just multiport repeaters, but their multiple ports give them some value in today’s networks.

By using a hub to connect hosts, we’re left with one collision domain. Any data sent by these hosts is subject to colliding with data sent by another host. We’ll talk more about collision domains in another CompTIA tutorial, but keep in mind that hubs do not break them up.

Using a hub also results in one broadcast domain, since a broadcast sent by any of these hosts will be heard by all other hosts.

Bridges and switches work at the Data Link layer of the OSI model, making them “Layer Two” devices. Both read MAC addresses to create a MAC address table, which allows the switches to help send frames to their proper destination. You see very few bridges in today’s networks, especially with the advent of Layer Three switches.

It’s not that bridges are bad at their job, it’s just that switches are better. They can operate at higher speeds and offer more options, especially now that many new switches can perform routing as well as switching. (Layer Three switches used to be called brouters, but as the usage of bridges has faded, so has the use of this term.)

There are two rather confusing facts regarding switches that confuse many newcomers, and I want to mention them again here. First, MAC addresses are also called physical addresses because they physically exist on the network interface card (NIC). They have nothing to do with the Physical layer of the OSI model.

Second, you’re going to hear several different names for the MAC address table throughout your career and your networking certification studies.

They’re all the same thing! But no matter what you call it, you should know how switches build this table and use it to determine the appropriate action to take with incoming frames. A switch is either going to forward, flood, or filter a frame, depending on whether it knows how to reach the destination MAC address of the frame. The fears seemed to be premature back then. Indeed, five years after news of IPv6 started grabbing the headlines, the perspective of IPv4 depletion is still at least five years away. This does serve IANA’s purposes: the migration is slow and gradual.

But most important, the migration is not determined only by the depletion problem. IPv6 offers several advantages of its own, besides the much larger address space, which ensures that IPv6 addresses will certainly not be depleted anywhere in the following decades.

What are these advantages? The IPv6 protocol includes many innovations, along with some features that are present in IPv4, but were developed after the IPv4 protocol itself. The most important of these are link-local addresses, jumbograms, link-layer level error checking, as well as native support for multicasting and network-layer security.

Link-local addresses are also present in IPv4. These are special addresses used in addition to global addresses, which applications can use. Link-local addresses are always present and never change, greatly simplifying the configuration and routing protocols.

Jumbograms are very large packets, potentially much larger than the IPv4-standard 64 kB packets. In a network, the data stream is not continuous, but discrete, carried using so-called packets, standard-sized pieces of information, which include not only the information itself, but also other details used for routing, error checking and so on. When IPv4 was designed, 64 kB packets were practical enough. Today, however, something as simple as a photograph requires hundreds of packets, each containing more than just the information. Thus, some traffic is, essentially, “wasted”. Jumbograms come to alleviate this: since several hundreds of KiB (or even more – up to 4 GB) can be packed into a single packet, the transfer of large files requires fewer packets, and hence less traffic used for something else than information. Furthermore, jumbograms can considerably simplify the design of protocols and low-level applications.

Unlike IPv4, IPv6 does not rely on network-level checksum fields to ensure that information is correctly transmitted. When IPv4 was designed, the network infrastructure was less reliable than today, meaning that errors were often occurring during transmission. It is thought that errors are much less common today, and thus, it makes sense to transfer error-checking to transport layers (protocols like TCP or UDP). As a consequence, IPv6 is quite easier to implement – an important advantage in the development of embedded systems, like network-enabled house appliances.

Finally, IPv6 has native support for IPsec, a network-layer encryption and authentication protocol. Unlike IPv4, IPv6 requires that this protocol is implemented.

IPv6 under Windows

Configuring Windows for IPv6 support is not very difficult. In fact, if you have Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you need not do anything – IPv6 is already there and enabled. Due to IPv6’s support for link-local addresses and DHCP, chances are you do not even need to go through any additional configuration tasks.

If you are using Windows XP, you will have to install the IPv6 protocol first. To do so, open the Command Prompt (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt) and type:

C:>netsh interface ipv6 install

To make sure that the installation has been successful, run ipconfig. The output should include a list of IPv6 addresses, along with some other IPv6 and IPv4-related output. It may look quite similar to this:

In most IPv6 networks, it is highly unlikely that you will need to change the IPv6 address. However, if you need to, you can do so by running the following command in the Command Prompt:

c:>netsh interface ipv6 add (address)

replacing (address) with the IPv6 you want to use.

IPv6 under Linux

Most Linux distributions come with an IPv6-ready kernel and userpace toolset. If you are using an older distribution, or if you have compiled the kernel manually, you may want to check that IPv6 support is available. If it does, your /proc filesystem will include the file /proc/net/if_inet6. If it is not, it means you need to load the IPv6 module, or, if it is not available, to recompile the kernel.

Loading the IPv6 modprobe is done by running modprobe:

$ modprobe ipv6

The module will be loaded if it exists. If not, you will have to recompile the kernel, or at least update it. Generally, updating the kernel is the easiest solution if your distribution allows you to. You will hardly find a single Linux distribution not supporting IPv6 by default. Otherwise, you will have to recompile your kernel for IP support. The list of options should include packet socket, Unix domain sockets, kernel/user netlink socket, routing messages, tcp/ip networking, the ipv6 protocol (compiled as a module if you want) and /proc filesystem support.

After enabling IPv6 support by loading the IPv6 module (if you have compiled IPv6 directly into the kernel, then you need not load the module – IPv6 support is already there), you can test your configuration by running ifconfig. The output should include lines like the following:

The lines that start with inet6 are the ones important.

Should you enable IPv6?

If you use IPv6 in a network, the answer is yes, definitely. IPv6 greatly simplifies network configuration – since it is so easy to assign dynamic addresses and since many of the IPv4-related hassles are gone, you hardly ever need to touch your TCP/IP configuration with IPv6.

However, if you do not use it at all, disabling it may slightly improve your network performances. Nevertheless, chances are you do not need to do it. Keeping it is a better bet.
